Just so you know, I am a magazine FREAK!!! So the fact that my daughter brought home her Jr. High magazine fundraiser has me screaming Yippee with excitement! I know, you must be thinking what?! Seriously? To that I say, YES! SERIOUSLY! For me, it's all about the little things in life and getting a few of these little things EVERY MONTH for a year makes me soooo happy. Even if I've had a rotten day, coming home to a new magazine changes my entire perspective. I can't explain it, but something about snuggling up in my favorite chaise and flipping those glossy pages from cover to cover is purely therapeutic. It is creative food for my brain and there's something about a rainy day that makes the experience even better. So when I noticed the envelope on my dresser earlier tonight I coudn't wait to pour over the catalog. To be honest, I've poured for way too long, because I couldn't help it. There was so much to choose from. I had a really hard time deciding but because I know I've now caught your attention and you are dying to know, (OK you probably really don't care) here are my picks this year.

Trust me, there were a lot more subscriptions I wanted to buy but because I like to save money, I've decided to follow them on line.

The Talk Before Bedtime

At approximately 8:30 pm last night, I decided to have a bedtime talk with my three children to prepare them for this morning. Here's how the talk went.

"Alright you guys! Tomorrow's a big day and I'm letting each of you know that Mommy will be armed and ready with her camera as you exit the front door.
You WILL stand and smile for three individual pictures.
NO slouching, NO frowning, NO eye rolling and NO COMPLAINING!
You WILL ALSO Stand with your sister(s) and brother for three group shots.
NO poking, NO fighting, NO pushing, NO silly faces and NO BUNNY EARS! Does everyone understand? "

"Yes Mom."

I went to bed feeling like the talk went really well.

Of course, this morning I'm excited to share a few of the shots I was able to grab of my morning birds as they walked out our front door.

UNO!

Rare is the day that my two oldest children get along. Rarer is the day that they get along while playing a game. In fact, I don't think there's ever been a game played where one of my children didn't stomp off crying. Can you guess which one of the three might blow during today's game of Uno?

B's look of despair is due to the fact that indeed, my oldest children are getting along too well while playing this game and they've teamed up against her. Yes, it is a bit mean that they've chosen the baby to pick on, but she's a tough one and can no doubt handle the pressure of the multiple skips and draw fours that are being thrown in her direction.

Thankfully, Fun Grandma, (refusing to be photographed in her morning glory) has her back and I'm confident that their duo of good will prevail over evil. If all goes B's way she'll send her siblings into a fit of rage when she happily screams UNO and lays down her 2nd to last card. It would be just like her to bring on the winds of change in the game, and one of the many reasons why we call her the CEO of our family.

A glimpse into the start of my 2011

It started out fine until my little boy who was most excited about it fell asleep...

and then my littlest suddenly threw up, then she threw up some more and then again, even more. My big girl kept it together and rang in the New Year loudly with a few fire works, thanks to her Daddy. The dog tolerated the hat. Fun Grandma always wishes there was more fun and although more fun is well, more fun. I was happy enough ringing in the New Year with my family.

What people should know about me when sending Christmas cards to my address.

1) I consider each and EVERY card I receive a gift.

2) I cherish them and the fact that someone thought enough of me to spend the time and money on postage to send their card my way.
3) I keep them. And when I say I keep them, I don’t just mean until after the New Year. I keep them FOREVER!

Here’s why.

It started before I was ever married or had children and my little sister hand drew me a Christmas card that was so cute and messy in her little handwriting. I hung it on the back of my apartment door so I could see it every day. (She's now 26)

That same year, my Grandmother sent me a card. I can remember looking at my Grandmother’s handwriting and I knew it was possible that it would be my first and last Christmas card from her. I also remember looking at her handwriting and never wanting to forget what it looked like.

Consequently, it was my last card from her, and that year, I kept those two cards and every other Christmas card I received. The following year, I did the same and it’s continued that way ever since. Some cards are in a decorative box and others are stacked together and tied with pretty ribbon.

When we pull down the boxes of Christmas decorations, the cards are one of the things I look forward to pulling out the most. Each year I go through the stacks to see how children have grown and families have changed. I even re-read Christmas letters. Although, some are frighteningly similar from year to year, I still LOVE them! So this is a thank you to all of the people in my past and those in my present for taking the time to think of my family and I at Christmas.

Sadly, I didn’t get it together enough to get my Christmas cards out this year, so I’m sharing a few of the cards I’ve received as well as a few of my favorites from the past.

I had hopes of getting more pictures taken for this birthday shoot post, but time escapes me, so the pictures I took last week when I snuck up on my birthday girl playing outside in an old dress belonging to her big sis will have to do.
Her 6 year mark is documented and to me that's really what matters most. Years from now, I won't remember that her hair wasn't brushed, that she was filthy dirty from her prior soccer game, or that the dress she has on is 4 sizes too big. I'll love them despite those things because they are of her exactly as she was in that little moment. Unplanned is good!

I was recently fortunate enough to have been able to soak in the love that this family has for one another. I'm always amazed when older children, esp. teen aged boys, literally grin and bear it for the sake of what "mom wants" and get along with their siblings in the process. These kids were a pleasure to hang out with and I promise you that the warmth in these pictures is genuine.

Hello Handsome!

I met up with little JD after a long year of growing and was greeted by a big smile and hug. Although, Mom and Dad insist that he's usually shy, smiles and hugs from this handsome boy were rolling the entire shoot!

We decided to monkey around for a bit which helped keep him happy, but the most fun we had came towards the end...

I love, love, love the bond between these sisters. I spent Sunday morning capturing some great shots as a surprise for their Mom's upcoming birthday. The great thing about these girls, besides their obvious love for each other? Their Dad doesn't even know they did this! Wish I could be there when their Mom opens her gift but more for little M's reaction than anything else. She loved seeing herself on the screen of my camera! She was soooo CUTE!

I love these shots. M was playing hide and go seek. She was such serious hider!

Had to get a few shots of my brother and his children during his trip to CA. Not only for him, but for my mother who would've likely disowned me had I not gotten at least one good shot of them. Her walls and frames are full of pictures of my children (duh!)but she doesn't have too many of my siblings and their children who live out of state.

I quickly took these pictures the evening before they departed for home and barely had enough light to pull it off. Lucky for me, my nieces and nephew were ridiculously cooperative unlike my children as you'll soon see.

Aw, there's my girl unhappy and uncooperative. This was just one of a few pictures where at least one or more of my children were frowning or making yucky faces. lol

What appears to be perfect children above followed by...

and then...

slightly blurry perfect children, next to their perfectly irritated cousin who's reprimanding a perfectly delighted with himself little brother, for creating a perfectly miserable littlest sister. Life without these moments wouldn't be as entertaining. I love my perfectly imperfect babies AND I'm crazy about my beautiful nieces and nephew!

Back to School Again

My baby girl started Kindergarten today, with a smile and a too confident, "BYE MOM!" before she skipped into her classroom for the first time, not unlike her siblings on their first day of Kindergarten.

My baby boy who doesn't act like a baby at all (until he falls subject to injury and then he reverts back to the antics of a hungry newborn) would barely stand still for a picture this morning and when I asked for a kiss good bye outside of his 3rd grade classroom? I got the dreaded, "Mooooooom", as response and knew that it was definitely a NOGO. It stung bad but I snuck one onto the top of his head during our hug and I'd fully recovered from the blow by the time I'd reached my office.

My oldest baby headed off to her first day of Junior High with her Dad and aside from the nagging pain I experienced a few weeks ago when I realized that from this day to college will be a blink of my eye, my growing up girl has practically been raised by 6th, 7th and 8th graders. I knew she'd be just fine. She's a Jr. High Gym Rat, who knows that campus inside and out, so when I asked her if she wanted me to drop her off and walk her to her first class, she replied, "Mother!", in a semi annoyed tone. Of course her Dad drove her to school and when I phoned him at around 9:30am to see how their morning was going, I didn't expect anything other than what I got. He said, she hopped out of the car the second he parked and he hadn't seen her since. However, he did hear from a few colleagues that she'd given one of the school counselors as well as the principle a big hug in passing, and that the smile she woke up with hadn't left her face. So, although it's painfully clear to me EVERY first day of school that my children are much too independent. Today, I'm choosing to look on the bright side.

I've never shed a tear on the first day of school.
I've never had a child shed a tear on the first day of school.
I've never had a child cling to my leg for dear life as his or her teacher attempts to pry their fingers from my bleeding skin.
I've never been called back to the school because my child remained in the fetal position after circle time while everyone else's had moved to their spots at the table.
I've never felt the urge to call the school secretary just to make sure everything was OK 10 times before lunch.
I've never arrived to the school parking lot an hour before the bell rings because I was unrealistically nervous that my child wasn't OK and no one bothered to call and tell me.
I've never had the "My baby is going to Jr. High for the first time Jitters."

In fact, I've never gotten anything but huge smiles, hugs, usually kisses and ALWAYS an enthusiastic "BYE MOM!" on the first day of school. For that I am grateful, but feel free to check back with me right after I blink and I'm dropping one of them off at their dorm. I'm sure by then, I'll have an entirely different story to tell.

I had some left over watermelon from last night's dinner and since I have a lemon tree that fortifies me the ability to utilize lemons til my heart's content, here's what I did with it. : )

I grabbed the recipe off of smittenkitchen.com

Watermelon Lemonade
Makes enough to fill two glasses with ice cubes. This recipe was quadrupled to make a pitcher.
1/4 cup (2 ounces) fresh-squeezed lemon juice
1/2 cup (4 ounces) fresh watermelon puree, strained through a coarse strainer to remove seeds
3 tablespoons (1 1/2 ounces) simple syrup*3/4 cup (6 ounces) cold water
Stir it all together and serve over ice.
Spritzy variation: I have never met a beverage I didn’t think would taste better bubbly, thus, if you’re looking for a spritzier version of this, swap one-third (1/4 cup) or more of the water with seltzer or sparkling water.
Boozy variation: This would taste even better with a splash of vodka.
* Make your own simple syrup: Simmer one part water with one part sugar until sugar has dissolved. Let cool.

I had to take a few pictures of my youngest child, who who rarely does anything on her own but decided to surprise me for Mother's Day and dress herself for an afternoon with Grandma. Funny, from the look of her, I thought we were headed to London for tea. I guess my little one's not only sassy but she's also got style. LOVE the cocktail ring and tap shoes !

I also snapped a few pictures of my kids with my Mom from our afternoon spent with her. My Mom is an endless giver, a huge support system and friend. From the pictures below, it's easy to see that she's also an amazing Grandmother. I owe her much, yet she expects nothing. I love you Mom.

When I meet clients for the first time I get a little nervous simply because I know, I take better pictures when I'm comfortable around the people I'm shooting. Sooooo when I was greeted by first time parents, Maegan and Kevin and instantly felt like we'd been friends forever, I was super happy. They HAD to be exhausted, but during the hour I spent with them and their flawless baby boy, they were more concerned about me than themselves. WOW! Take a peak at sweet Baby Carter. Fantastic parents and gorgeous? At 24 hours old, I'd say he's already way ahead of the pack!

OK, so when someone mentions that they're getting married by a Justice of the Peace, in a non-traditional wedding, let's face it. Poeple usually don't bum rush the bride with a million questions about the details. However, I recently shot a wedding at the San Francisco City Hall and have to say, it was an AMAZING way to "seal the deal" on a budget, so to speak. Minus the usual traditional wedding details, you'll see that there was plenty for the eye to feast on. An afternoon luncheon following the ceremony, included family and friends, and then a short shoot at the Palace of Fine Arts, completed the Bride and Groom's special day. This wedding proves it's possible to have a nice event without breaking the bank. In this economy? It's worth mentioning.

My daughter wanted to giver her friend,Taylor, something special for her 11th Birthday so I decided to take some pictures of them while Taylor's mom was out shopping for her birthday gift. I had so much fun capturing their special friendship and was instantly reminded of how my best friend and I were at that age. Sure wish someone would have followed US around with a camera!!!

Each year in June, I try to find a way to thank my husband for all of the amazing things he does for myself and our 3 children. This year, I decided to start a new tradion of Father's Day pictures. What better way to show him how much he's loved than to feeze a moment in time with his 3 favorite little people. I think it will be fun to capture their physical changes as well as the changes in their relationships. Next year I think I'll open it up as a photo package for other Mom's to give their husband's too!

So I ventured out into a whole new world last week. My first Wedding!!!!

Amazing guests and happiness abound. Yes, It was exhausting, I felt like I'd done aerobics with my camera for 8 hours and I went to bed thinking, NEVER AGAIN!!! The next morning (OK, more like afternoon) I woke up with a smile and now I can't wait for another...

I had an amazing time photographing this easy going bride and groom. The bride's smile was so infectious; you couldn't help but be happy around them.

A little about me...

I think I’ve been a photographer my whole life, although most of the pictures I took were with my eyes and are ingrained only in my memory and not on photo paper.

Little things amaze me… A lone sand dollar sitting untouched in the sand, surrounded by dozens of others that weren’t as lucky. The expression on a toddlers face when ice cream is tasted for the first time. A father’s arm locked around his daughter's as he walks her down the aisle.

It is the collection of little things from our lives that frame our pasts and shape our futures, and a love for that collection is what inspires my photography.

Over time I've been fortunate enough to turn my passion for photography into a part time business...one that enables me to capture some of the best moments of the lives around me.
